about

Looking back

For this year’s edition of John the Revelator’s gig in the ever fabulous Thalia theatre, IJmuiden, we moved to the dim and distant past of the late sixties and early seventies.
The gig was initially meant just to put the spotlight on unsung guitar hero Danny Kirwan whose unique harmonic playing has been an inspiration for ages.
However young Erwin, who after rehearsals is often toying around with bits and pieces of songs, which are miles away from the normal Revelator setlist, surprised us with a one-man rendition of Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy”. Now this is a song we grew up with but not young Erwin who was merely a blink in the milkman’s eye then.
This led to the idea to pay homage to some great bands of the late sixties and early seventies during a one off gig.
To add some balls to the music we invited a couple of friends to join in, ‘ Blues of zo’ guitarist Henk Schippers for his marvelous guitar chops, the ever trustworthy Mississippi Threesome (if you ever need a Harlem gospel choir, just call them), tenor guy Bert Baars for his screaming saxophone lines and last but not least vocal chameleon Jacques Kloes with his fantastic soulful voice.
We were ready to go……………………………………………….

A couple of days before the gig Tom informed the band he had been approached by a guy called
Rob Zonneveld who had offered to film the gig.
Considering the number of new (and for Revelator standards unusual) songs and the additional friends on stage we were a bit skeptical about the idea.
Jack Bruce once said, “the best gig is a gig that has not been recorded” meaning that after the show you can leave the stage with a feel that you really cracked it only to discover the inevitable flaws at the play back of the tape (or should I say hard disc, this is 2013?). Of course he’s right!!!!

Not this time, however!
The moment we hit the stage all pre show stage fright was gone. From the first chords of ”White Room” to the encore the sound – as always done by the professionals from KO-sound - was smashing. We were very relaxed and inspired and there were no cock-ups by little f**cking out of tune things or wrong drumbeats this time. Without depriving the other numerous gigs we do every year we had the feeling that this gig was really the business.
No doubt the low profiles of the cameramen and soundman Paul Maassen during filming contributed to this because we never realized we were being filmed.

It would be a damned waste to keep this stuff under wraps. That’s why we have invited some technical guys for the immense job of preparing it for release on DVD.
As usually our home producer Henk Suurling worked his **s off to edit and mix the sound while Rob Zonneveld did an equally monster job editing the images.
A big thank you goes to all people who were involved in this project.

Well then, here is the new and quite unexpected John the Revelator DVD. Hope you like it as much as we liked playing the gig.

Be seeing you
