about

John the Revelator’s annual big bash at the IJmuiden Thalia Theatre was something of a special event in 2004.
Not only did the gig mark the 35th anniversary of the band, everything was there to record the long planned DVD at last.

Big lorries were blocking the stage entry outside, five cameras and miles of cable were all over the place and the soundcheck took a hell of a time contrary to the quick “one two” in the mike or the touching the jacket of a guitar lead to see if the thing works as we do in smaller venues.
And oh yes, we were not supposed to dress in black because that would not suit the stage lights.
To hit the party full swing we had invited the same old friends who made our last album “Down in the Mud” such a treat.
Kaz Lux, Frank Kraaijeveld, Jacques Kloes, Gus la Porte and Han van Dam from Barrelhouse and last but not least the ever faithfull Alabama Horns.
Blues Experience, Cor and Tom’s occasional vehicle for stepping out of line, did some tracks featuring axman Henk Schippers. No problem as long as they do it safe!

Even Toms little boy was there to give the show a grunchy flavour for a couple of songs decreasing the average age on stage considerably for the duration.
It was a great thing playing live with all those guys we’ve been meeting on the road since John the Revelator kicked off in 1969.

As in all live recordings things can go wrong but according to the good Revelator tradition there were no “repairs” on the DVD whatsoever.
You can see the leadguitarist stumble over his own guitar lead causing the damned thing to disconnect from the guitar while brother in arms Gus la Porte takes over the lead break during “Like it this Way”.
You can also see our roadie looking like a Startrek or Thunderbirds character crossing the stage completely unplanned in the middle of a song.
Such things could easily have been covered up but we chose to show you the way it really was, cock ups or not.

Well, after a long period of editing, mixing and dealing with all kind of commercial hassles the DVD is finally there. Hope you like it.
We’ve chosen for the DVD/CD format in a strictly limited and luxury edition.

Looking to the DVD the gig was great with all John the Revelator ingredients present.
Another good thing is that the gig brought back our keyboard wizzard Erwin who used to play with us in the late eighties.
Come to think of it celebration gigs are good for bringing back prodigal sons.
Our 20th anniversary gig in 1989 caused former slide guitarist Paul to return to the Revelator ranks.
With Tom on vocals and bass, Cor on drums and me doing the leadguitar and the occasional harmonica stuff we hope to play the blues for years to come.

Be seeing you
